Information about BROMLEY Bromley is where the metropolitan sprawl of the capital gives way to beautiful countryside of Kent, known as The Garden of England. The fabulous West End is less than 12 miles away, yet London's largest borough is also one of its greenest. There are over 100 parks and gardens and guided walks and tours are provided at many of them. Bromley certainly is very proud of bringing the countryside into London. The most interesting attraction is Chislehurst Caves. Although they are deep beneath the ground, they provide a fascinating commentary on the history of the area. The soft chalk was useful in construction, but the labyrinth of mines and passageways have served many purposes since they were first dug hundreds of years ago. Previous residents of Bromley include Charles Darwin, and you can visit Downs House, where much of his research was done. H. G. Wells was born here and his birthplace and school are marked by London’s famous blue plaques. A great deal of the open spaces are used for sporting activities, and Bromley is also home to The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
